The project for conservation of the mosaic in the narthex of the Episcopal Basilica has started this month. During the first phase, after the documentation, the mosaic will be removed from its original position and the mortar background will be cleaned. The second phase will start in 2013 and it includes affixing the mosaic on honey comb panels and placing it back in the Basilica.
The floor decoration of the narthex, belonging to the end of the 5th or the beginning of the 6th century, is considered to be one of the most luxurious arrangements in Stobi regarding its colour, size of the tesserae and the elaborate execution. The mosaic was uncovered during the ‘20s of the past century and except minor preventive treatments, it has never been fully conserved. The intention of NI Stobi is to include this wonderful mosaic in the presentation of the site since it was unavailable for the public in the past 30 years.
