The lamp has a depiction of a seated lion with a rich mane, and above it, a slinky snake is shown. The image is surrounded by a circle of grapevines. The potter’s name was inscribed on the bottom of the lamp, but the inscription is not legible. The lion has always held a high place as the emblem of deathless courage, and, hence, that of a valiant warriors and heroes. The lion with such repute of its noble nature and having the position and title of king of the beasts has been a popular symbol of aristocracy and royalty. The snake is an ancient chthonic symbol, which has different meaning in different myths and cults. Although it is mostly associated with evil and dangerous creatures, it is also important symbol of fertility, rebirth, healing, perspicacity etc.
