Between September 3 and October 30, 2026, NI Stobi carried out archaeological excavations at the Theodosian Palace, one of the most representative Late Antique residential complexes at Stobi. The excavations form part of the larger project for the conservation and presentation of the building’s architectural remains.
This year’s investigations focused on five rooms, primarily involving the re-excavation and documentation of areas previously explored during earlier archaeological campaigns. The investigations provided new insights into the complex’s architectural development and different phases of occupation.
Among the findings is the preserved foundation for a mosaic or cocciopesto floor in one of the rooms. In two other rooms, remains of earlier buildings and associated drainage channels were identified, offering valuable evidence of architectural phases preceding the construction of the Theodosian Palace. The excavations also enabled a clearer definition of the complex’s southwestern entrance.
The results will contribute to a better understanding of the building’s architectural history and provide essential documentation for the ongoing conservation works.
The archaeological investigations were carried out as part of the broader conservation project for the Theodosian Palace, implemented by NI Stobi in cooperation with the Balkan Heritage Foundation, with financial support from the J. M. Kaplan Fund and Ancient Rome Live.
