Тhe rarest terracotta figurines in the Stobi collection are those that depict domestic pigs or wild boars. The boar hunting in the antiquity has often been considered as a test of bravery. Therefore, the hunting scenes frequently are represented, both in art and in literature. Two of the most famous mythological stories are the glorious hunt for the Calydonian boar in which many heroes took part and one of the Heracles twelve deeds. Тhe boar if often connected with the cult of Artemis, the goddess of hunt and mistress of all animals and wildlife, while domestic pig is commonly sacrificed to Demeter. Ares, the god of war, had the ability to transform himself into a wild boar. The animal figurines are also regularly explained as a genre scene from everyday life.
