The conservation project for the mosaic of the Old Episcopal Basilica finalized

September, 10 2013 | Ioannes Stobaeus

The conservation of the mosaic from the Old Episcopal Basilica was realized during June, July and August. The process included 72 fragments (180 m2) removed from the original position in 1991. The cleaning of the old mortar bedding was conducted in 1992 when the process was interrupted and stopped for many years. In 2013, the conservation team headed by Dragan Vergovski Alpi finalized the conservation with the application of new lime mortar bedding and aluminum honey comb panels. The project was financed by the self-funding of NI Stobi. The return of the mosaic to its original position in the Early Christian church is expected in 2014.

The mosaic of the Old Episcopal Basilica is one of the oldest Christian floor decorations in Macedonia. The various mosaic segments are the result of different donors from the end of the 4th and the first half of the 5th century. Particularly interesting is the segment that carries an inscription which reveals the name of the bishop Eustathios as a patron of the extension of the church to the east at the beginning of the 5th century.
