International Field School at Stobi

Four years in a row, NI Stobi and the Balkan Heritage Foundation are organizing an archaeological field school that attracts students and archaeology lovers from all over the world. This year’s campaign began on the 3rd of August with lectures about the history and archaeology of Stobi and Macedonia, as well as presentation on the methodology practiced by NI Stobi. After the preparations and the cleaning of the area wеre finished, the excavations were commenced in one of the buildings close to the Porta Heraclea. The remains of a house from the second half of the 6th century are being revealed. The building belongs to the last urban phase of Stobi, after which the city was abandoned.

 

The program of the school organized in two sessions of 15 days in which the participants are directly included in the excavations and preparation of field documentation. Besides the fieldwork and the lectures, the field school includes visits of Ohrid, Bitola and Shtip as an introduction to the rich cultural heritage of these regions. Depending on the attended sessions, all of the participants acquire certificates and a number of university credits. The international field school will end at the 31st of August.
